Art Out of Wreckage
Passion of the Earth art series saved along with Melanie from auto accident in June 2005.

On the way to complete the Passion of the Earth commissioned art project, I was involved in a serious auto accident (see Thank You pages). Helpful bystanders at the wreck site saved the first six fabric art pieces, sending them with me in the ambulance to the ER! While waiting for my x-ray results, nurses asked to see the quilts, and I started coming out of shock and feeling myself again as my friend Jill held each one up for show and tell, right there in the Emergency Room. A small crowd of ER techs and nurses in green scrubs gathered around-- and about 12 of us shared the unfolding of the story. I remember thinking, "This is why I'm alive!" |

The next day, friends Ron Crosby and Aaron Pruitt rescued the remaining fabric from the car wreck that had been towed. Police Officer Carpentier and Hillsboro Towing had arranged to tarp the wreck to keep out the rain. Just in time, before anything molded, we spread out the material to dry, and most of it was saved! |

A month later, I finished the seventh piece in the Passion of the Earth series, called Abundance, made out of the very fabric that survived the auto accident. The light blue bird in the Abundance image is made out of my denim jeans that were cut off me in the ambulance ride-- symbolizing that even our great tragedies can be transformed into abundant gifts of learning and creativity when we invite God/Love to open our hearts. |
