Patience

August 2004 – watercolor, ink, collage – 7×15″

Art text:  Patience

Collection of the artist

Inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching: “Do you have the patience to wait until the mud settles and the water is clear?  Can you remain unmoving until the right action rises by itself?”  Note that I’d written the word “patience” over the wrong jar, then fixed the mistake.

Melanie, I just spent yesterday with you in Des Moines at a workshop. When I walked in and saw your paintings laid out in a circle at the center of our worship space; this painting was my least favorite. I knew right then that I would not buy this one. Compared to the others there was no color or life in it. And then when you shared its story and I cried. The one I knew for sure I wasn’t taking home with me is the one that sits with me now. Just like you shared, I too, have done those science experiments with kids where we go and get the pond water and then wait for the mud to settle and only in that settling can we see the life swimming around. And your analogy, (my words here) that when we let that “stuff” settle then we can have clarity to see the life that is and was there in the midst of the mud and chaos all along. I am still in awe! Thank you for the lesson of this painting!
